Macedonia

                                           My country

I live in Macedonia. The capital city is Skopje. Macedonia also has a                                                                                              new name, North Macedonia. It’s also located in Europe.

-         Population, language, places and food

In Macedonia the population is around 2 million people. Here in Macedonia most people speak Macedonian language. If you want to go on a vaccation here in Macedonia, you don’t have to worry about how much money you bring, because here in Macedonia things are very cheap. There are so many beautiful places to visit. For example, you should visit the Canyon Matka, Mavrovo National Park, Ohrid Town, Stobi, the Old Bazaar and many more! The food here is great. There are many choices on what to eat. There are also a lot of famous traditional meals that people here love, for exapmle Musaka (meat & potato dish), Sarma (cabbage rolls with meat & rice), Ajvar (red paprika spread), Pastrmajlija, Turli Tava (mixed veggies and meat in a pan), Polneti piperki (stuffed bell peppers), Zelnik/Pita (stuffed pastry/pie) and many more!

-         People and homes

I think in Macedonia people can sometimes be rude, but also be very helpful and interesting to hang out with. People nowadays usually live in buildings. But there are also some people that live in houses as well. Many people that still live in houses, have modern style houses.

-         Hobbies and popular activities

Teenagers here like to go out and hang out with their friends in their free time. They also like going shopping. Adults in the other hand, like working around the house. Popular outdoor activities here are Hiking, Rock climbing, Diving, Jogging and more! Here in Macedonia, if you are a tourist you can Explore Skopje, go on a day trip, go on the beach etc. Also, you can go on a sightseeing holiday and visit places of interest.

In my opinion, I don’t mind living here, but I would still prefer to live     somewhere else!

Macedonia

My country

I'm from Macedonia, and now I will tell you something about Macedonia.

Macedonia is a small but beautiful country in the middle of the Balkan. The capital city is Skopje. Skopje is a beautiful city with multi ethnic culture. In Skopje there are living 600,000 people. But in Macedonia there are a lot of cities like: Ohrid, Bitola, Stip, Struga and more. Language who people speak in Macedonia is Macedonian, but the restaurants, shops and other catering facilities should speak English too.

In Skopje we have some landmarks like Canyon Matka, Fortress in Skopje, the old Skopje bazaar and the centre in Skopje. If you love kayaking you can go at Canyon Matka, you can go climbing too but it is very dangerous. Also you can visit Ohird it is a good place for relax, swimming in the lake or take a deep breath next to the lake. In my opinion if you enjoy climbing or mountain biking you can go to Mount Vodno in Skopje. It is a very good place. I usually go with my bike because there are great downhill trails. When I go running I go to ,,Кеј’ ,because it is near river ,,Vardar’’ and the air is clean.

Mount Vodno                                                                            Canyon Matka

In Skopje we have three malls: Skopje City Mall , Ramstore Mall and Mall which is in the centre of Skopje. In this malls you can buy everything you want, like clothes, technology, food, drinks and more things.
If you think where to go on holiday, Macedonia is a great place to visit I promise .

"Water pollution, and how it effects us."

Homework

"Water pollution, and how it effects us."

Aleksandar Davitkovik 8v n.4

Water pollution is defined as the contamination of water bodies, usually as a result of human activities. Water pollution is not just harmful to the various animals living in it, it is also harmful to us.

Water pollution is when bodies of water get contaminated with industrial and agricultural effluents.

Water bodies in the vicinity of urban areas are extremely polluted. This is the result of dumping garbage and toxic chemicals by industrial and commercial establishments.

The effects of water pollution can be long term and affect future generations.

Some of these water-borne diseases are Typhoid, Cholera, Paratyphoid Fever, Dysentery, Jaundice, Amoebiasis and Malaria. Chemicals in the water also have negative effects on our health. Pesticides – can damage the nervous system and cause cancer because of the carbonates and organophosphates that they contain.

-The Minamata Incident

In 1932, a factory in Minamata City, Japan began dumping its industrial effluent – Methylmercury, into the surrounding bay and the sea. Methylmercury is incredibly toxic to humans and animals alike, causing a wide range of neurological disorders.

Its ill-effects were not immediately noticeable. However, this all changed as methylmercury had started to bioaccumulate inside shellfishes and fish in the Minamata Bay. These affected organisms were then caught and consumed by the local population. Soon, the ill-effects of methylmercury was becoming apparent.

Initially, animals such as cats and dogs were affected by this. The city’s cats would often convulse and make strange noises before dying – hence, the term “dancing cat disease” was coined. Soon, the same symptoms were observed in people, though the cause was not apparent at the time.

Other affected people showed symptoms of acute mercury poisoning such as ataxia, muscle weakness, loss of motor coordination, damage to speech and hearing etc. In severe cases, paralysis occurred, which was followed by coma and death.  These diseases and deaths continued for almost 36 years before it could be officially acknowledged by the government and the organisation.

Since then, various control measures of water pollution have been adopted by the government of Japan to curb such environmental disasters in the future.

Water pollution, to a larger extent, can be controlled by a variety of methods. Rather than releasing sewage waste into water bodies, it is better to treat them before discharge. Practising this can reduce the initial toxicity and the remaining substances can be degraded and rendered harmless by the water body itself. If the secondary treatment of water has been carried out, then this can be reused in sanitary systems and agricultural fields.

A very special plant, the Water Hyacinth can absorb dissolved toxic chemicals such as cadmium and other such elements. Establishing these in regions prone to such kinds of pollutants will reduce the adverse effects to a large extent.

Film Review

Home Alone

Family comedy, 1990

For the Christmas holiday a young boy's family goes on vacation in France. But, the morning they leave to the airport, they forget their son, Kevin, who is left home alone. Kevin has to defend his house of two robbers, who will try to rob his house. So, he sets traps all over his house and try to keep them away.

I love the actors in this film. Macaulay Culkin plays Kevin and Joe Pesci and Daniel Stern play the two robbers, Harry and Marv. My favourite character is Kevin because he is very smart and funny. Also, I think that this film is good because it’s the perfect Christmas film to watch with your family.

I give Home Alone ★★★★★, go and watch it soon!
